Sathian Koses, has explained that the word “Songkran”came from Sanskrit language. It means “movement”. It has something to do with the movement of the moon, the planets and the sun in the Zodiacal orbits. Songkran is the period when the sun moves from Pisces into Aries. It is the beginning of the traditional Thai New Year. The traditional activities include Thais paying respect to their elders by pouring scented water in their hands, bathing of Buddha statue, building sand pagodas and splash water at each other. Songkran also coincides with some other countries in this region.
