There are large H'mong populations in many states, but because of certain very active volunteer agencies based in Minnesota, for many, this was their first stop. And because of private and public institutions offering help, a stable economy, and a welcoming culture, many stayed. Others came here from other states because of family ties and to join with old communities. The same thing is repeating itself with the Somalian refugees. The US has received 85,000 refugees since their civil war started in 1991, and over 40% have moved to Minnesota. Not where you'd expect a bunch of hot climate African Muslims to end up either, but you can't go a day in this city without seeing a hijab.
