As noted previously, make an effort to see if someone –either another student or adult in your school –can assist occasionally in translating, especially in the beginning. You may want to learn a few critical words and/or phrases in the student’s language such as bathroom, Do you understand?/Are you okay? And so on. This can help smooth the way in some potential crisis situation. In turn, help the student to learn some English words and/or phrases that will help him or her to communicate with you in urgent situations-you can decide what words would be most important in your own classroom and school environment.
