One of the
lesson plans is shown in Appendix B. After
each group performed their tasks, the plan
was to permute the groups so that each
group could visit the other groups’ flowers.
At that point, the future teachers at each table
were responsible for discussing why
one-half of a circle flower is not equal to
one-half of another shape’s flower. In summary,
during the Girls’ Math Night Out, the
future teachers were responsible to create
equivalent fraction flowers with elementary
children and to develop the concept of
equivalent fractions so that the children
could better understand the importance ofthe whole in a fraction. The goal of this activity
was to help the school children to understand
some of the Common Core State
Standards on fractions, such as being able to
compare two fractions with the same numerator
or the same denominator by reasoning
about their size and recognizing that comparisons
are only valid when the two fractions
refer to the same whole (CCSSI, 2010)
and giving the future teachers an opportunity
to interact with children.
