(Kinsey et al. 1948, 1953). While the Kinsey Report is still widely quoted, the volunteers interviewed for the report were not representative of the nation’s adult population. Since then, social scientific studies of sexual behavior have typically been rather limited in scope but still useful. For example, every two years the general public is interviewed as a part of the federally funded General Social Survey. In Figure 2-5, we see how attitudes about premarital sexual behavior have changed since the early 1970.
