The scouring pad used in this study was made of nylon with theenormous cavity varying from 10 to 100 m and provided about1000 times larger spaces for fungal growth compared to free cells[35]. This condition can be clearly seen in the SEM micrographs.
Darah and Ibrahim [36] also found that Phanerochete chrysospo-rium immobilized in scouring mesh cubes produced higher lignin peroxidase and manganese peroxidase as well as fungal growththan immobilized in calcium alginate beads. Scouring pad is thebest choice of support materials that allowed effective attachmentof the fungal mycelia and no suspended cells or mycelia pelletswere detected in the culture medium; thus, this condition facili-tated the harvesting and analysis of enzyme activity. It also make them easy to handle and can be conveniently packed in bioreactor system for easy recycling of substrates in a continuous system for industrial processes.
