Although eating disorders are rare in the general population, they are
relatively common in teenagers and young women. Eating disorders
represent the third most common chronic illness (after asthma and
obesity) in adolescent females. The prevalence of AN is about 0.3%; BN
is more common, with a prevalence of about 1% in young women and
0.1% in men;1 and EDNOS occur at much higher rates than full syndrome
disorders.
