New entrants are usually appointed as trainees or assistants in the plantation level where they are provided on-job training in tea tasting, marketing and managing. It is believed that hands- on training is the easiest and the fastest way of training candidates to learn the tricks of the trade. On gaining experience the assistants are graduated to the Assistant Manager post and then as Managers of tea gardens. Though the jump from a trainee to an Assistant Manager could be a quick one, becoming a Manager of a tea garden usually requires a prior experience of 10-12 years.
Some of the personal attributes essential for this job comprise a liking for out doors, compatibility and ability to deal with all classes of people especially with the labour class who work in the tea gardens. Should possess good knowledge of the geographical location and topography of the area. A tea taster is expected to develop a nose for good tea, and must acquire the skill of comparing teas of different taste, grade and quality.
