Out-of-control worker’s compensation cases in the 1990s led to the concept of medical management of workplace injuries. Through better management of worker’s compensation claims, more than 30 states have merged the concept of workers’ compensation and managed care. The goals of these state-level efforts are to (1) speed up the processing of worker’s compensation claims; (2) reduce costs; (3) reduce fraud and abuse; and (4) improve medical management of workplace injuries.
