Follow-Up: Outcome
Median intensive care unit length of stay was 4 days (lower and upper quartiles, 3-5 days), ranging from 2 to 8 days. Only 2 deaths were recorded (9.5%), and both of them were attributed to severe cerebral edema. All patients who survived were reexamined 6 months after their discharge from the intensive care unit. All patients older than age 6 years returned to their appropriate grade in school. None of the survivors had motor deficits or recurrent epilepsy. Finally, there was no developmental delay reported by patients’ parents.
