Introduction
As citizens of the world we live in a rapidly changing and advancing knowledge based society where we are called upon to constantly solve complex issues on a daily basis, issues that require the ability to think and act by accessing a broad spectrum of knowledge bases (Askwell-Williams, Murray Harvey & Lawson, 2005; Mulchay, 2006; Tan,
2007). Based on the premise of connecting theory to practice one of the greatest challenges in pre-service teacher education is to foster students’ abilities to integrate their learning over a period of time employing metacognitive strategies in order to meet those challenges in the 21st century classroom.
