Long QT
syndrome (LQTS)
Characterised by sudden loss of consciousness in association
with exercise, and emotional/stressful experience
Night terror Parents of children with night terrors are often woken by
piercing scream; child looks flushed, frightened and agitated,
and is not easily aroused
Pseudo-seizure Characterised by:
■■Age 10–18 years of age, especially in girls
■■Bizarre ‘seizure’ with pelvic thrusting and rolling
movements; cessation is usually sudden
■■ Post-ictal (after seizure) drowsiness or confusion is unusual
■■Absence of cyanosis, tongue biting or injury
■■Video recording of the event is useful and often diagnostic
■■Normal EEG, often showing excess of muscle artefacts
■■Normal serum prolactin (raised in true epilepsy)
