In the process, it will be helpful to keep in mind that there are two primary bases for alliances: shared interests [things we both care about] and opportunistic trades [you support me on matters I care about and I’II support you.] A shared-interest alliance might spring up if influential and employees have already been advocating changes the new leader seeks. By contrast, an opportunistic trade might be possible with the general manager of a sister division, who could decide to redeploy some manufacturing assets to make subassemblies for the new leader’s business, saving her the cost of changing factories, in return for joint marketing or bundling of products and service.
