Trimming Nails, Corns, or Calluses
Depending on the patient’s needs, health status, and
setting, the nurse may remove corns and calluses
and trim nails if it can be accomplished without
causing additional discomfort when ambulating or
working. The nurse should take care to avoid breaking
the dermal layer of skin and increasing the risk
of infection.
These guidelines are not intended for diabetic
clients or others with significant health issues who
would need care that is beyond the scope of the setting.
These patients are given health education and
referred to appropriate providers.
