The first step in design engineering was to receive electronically the data previously entered into the negotiation program. The process entailed pulling the data records from the negotiation database. The design engineer reread the customer’s spec and decided which additional data needed to be added to the input files for the design program. The program then generated a design that the engineer reviewed in detail and often revised. After the design was accepted by the engineer, the electronic computer file and a paper folder with completed job forms were sent to a drafting supervisor for completion.
