Wefound a positive and significant association between HIV infection and recreational drug use as described elsewhere (Pantalone et al., 2008; Semple, Patterson, &Grant, 2002). However, we found that recreational drug use was strongly associated with HIV infection. This suggests that an HIV-infected participant using recreational drugs mayalso engage in high-risk behaviors. Semple et al. identified plausible explanations of recreational drug use, particularly methamphetamine, among HIV-infected MSM; they included coping with the HIV-positive diagnosis and the shadow of death, providing an escape fromHIV infection, managing negative self-perceptions and social rejection, and using it as a remedy for HIV-related health issues such as fatigue.
