Research and extension activities for the crop sector were done through the Central Agriculture Research Institute (CARI) and the Extension Division of the Myanmar Agriculture Service (MAS), both of which are under the MOAI. The activities of CARI include conducting basic crop research; breeding HYVs and upgrading the quality of crops; producing hybrid varieties through bilateral and commercial cooperation; and introducing improved varieties of field crops, fruits, and vegetables from abroad to upgrade crop quality and increase yield. CARI also works closely with international organizations like the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). It also collaborates with international research institutes such as the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) and the International Centre for Research in Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT).
