Standard treatment consists of acute anti-inflammatory
drugs for gouty flares, followed by the long-term uratelowering
therapy. Anti-inflammatory treatment aims at reducing
the pain and swelling. Established treatments are
NSAIDs and sometimes corticosteroids. Colchicine can be
used as gout prophylaxis, especially when urate-lowering
therapy is first introduced, but it is also used for acute
gout. Drugs targeting IL-1β [4] are also effective in acute
gout (e.g. rilonacept and canakinumab).
