igashi Honganji (東本願寺), officially known as Shinshu Honbyo, is the mother temple of the Shinshu Otani-ha branch of Jodo Shinshu (Shin Buddhism or Pure Land Buddhism), whose founder is Shinran Shonin (1173-1262). This temple is located in Kyoto City, Japan; a few minutes walk from the Kyoto Station. The temple belonging to main sect of Jodo Shinshu, Nishi Hongwangji temple is located behind this temple, one street over on Horikawa dori.
The hallmark of this temple is the immense gate called "Goei-do Mon" leading to the Goei-do Hall (The Founder's Hall). It is one of the largest temple gates in the entire Japan with dimensions of (103 feet by 95 feet).
During the initial construction in 1895, about 53 ropes, made from the hair of female followers are used. The Amida Hall, holds one of the ropes from that time and also the sledges that were used to transport the timber from the Japanese' mountains.
