Hierarchical multiple regression analyses were used to test the relationships. The
mediation and moderation effects were tested based on the guidelines provided by
Baron and Kenny (1986). The results in Table II reveal that positive affectivity
(b ¼ 20:33; p , 0:001) and intrinsic motivation (b ¼ 20:19; p , 0:05) are
significantly and negatively related to emotional exhaustion. Therefore, H1a and
H1b are supported. As demonstrated in Table II, the control variables do not
significantly influence emotional exhaustion with the addition of positive affectivity
and intrinsic motivation in step 2.
