Aikenhead (1979) developed and field tested a curriculum titled “Science: A
Way of Knowing.” The primary goals of the curriculum were to have students develop
(a) a realistic, nonmythical understanding of the nature, processes, and social
aspects of science; (b) a variety of inquiry skills and a realistic feeling of personal
competence in the areas of interpreting, responding to, and evaluating their scientific
and technological society; and (c) insight into the interaction of science and
technology and, in turn, into the interaction of these with other aspects of society.
