The scenarios that included the spreading of solid fraction of digestate on arable land (Base LS-A(W), Base LS-C(W)a, Base LSC( W)b) were the only variations that did not reduce ME impacts. Both scenarios incurred increased ME impacts of 0.005 kg N-eq, which can be attributed to the reduced availability of active fertilizer ingredients in digestate arising from separation of the liquid fraction from the digestate. Reduced transportation requirements due to separated digestate marginally relieved ME impacts, compared to Base LS that considered the transportation of all the digestate (Poeschl et al., in press).
