Cogorderos has a long tradition of cultivation of this crop, and during the last years before the experiment, common bean was cultivated every 3 or 4 years, the last time 3 years before the start of the experiment. For each soil, the number of infective rhizobia per gram of soil was estimated following the most probable number (MPN) method, using a 10-fold dilutions series up to 106 (Beck et al., 1993).
