While emphasizing the retention of the “premise that research and technical skills remain the most important aspects of any research training, the document argues that training in “professional skills” to complement these core skills is necessary, and that “non-academic sectors (private industry, government and not-for-profit)” should be encouraged to “work closely with academia to better prepare researchers for their entry into the labour force” (1).
