In general, free cells are not suitable for directly use in heavy metal contaminated soil because they have low resistance to toxic environmental conditions and strongly compete with indigenous microflora in soil. Moreover, the fresh cell preparation is difficult and needs optimal conditions to cultivation. To solve these problems, the immobilized cells were considered to be used instead of free cells. The immobilized cells can tolerate to improper environment and protect them against the indigenous microflora in soil (Jézéquel et al., 2005).
