Is she going to wake up?” Dipper asked shakily, sitting next to Mabel’s prone form and clutching her soft hand.
Mabel was surrounded by beeping machines. A tube was down her throat and her face was pale. An IV was strapped into her other hand and she looked practically lifeless. It was absolutely heartbreaking and agonizing.
The doctor gave Dipper a sympathetic look and hugged the chart close to her chest. “She has several broken bones, we managed to take care of the internal bleeding, and she’s going to need a lot of recovery….if she wakes up.” She informed Dipper softly. “We’re doing the best we can to make her comfortable but if she did wake up, we wouldn’t even know if she’d have brain damage.”
Dipper sucked in a deep breath and nodded slowly, falling forward and resting his forhead on Mabel’s hand. “Isn’t there anything else you can do?” He asked pathetically. “She’s my twin…we’ve never been…I need her.”
“She was hit by a speeding pig truck, Mister Pine,” The doctor said, “That she didn’t die instantly is a miracle already.”
Dipper choked down a sob and nodded, still pressing his forhead against Mabel’s hand.
The doctor gently squeezed Dipper’s shoulder in reassurance. “I’ll leave you two for now,” She said softly before quietly leaving the room.
It was when the door clicked shut that Dipper allowed himself to really let go. Shuddering sobs wracking his body as tears and snot fell freely. How was he going to tell his parents? And Grunkle Stan? How was he going to survive without Mabel?
She literally completed him. Where he had pessimism, she had optimism. While he was reserved, she was outgoing. She encouraged him to push boundries just like he encouraged her to hold back and think practically. How was he supposed to function without his twin?
“Mabel,” He whimpered, “How could you do this to me? You can’t do this to me.” He gripped Mabel’s hand tighter, “I would do anything to get you back.”
“Anything, huh?”
Dipper shot up, still gripping Mabel’s hand though this time more protectively as the color of the room was being sucked up into a sort of vortex, being absorbed. The color twisted into one point and then popped outward into the room, forming the brightness of a familiar pyramid shaped demon.
“Bill!” Dipper exclaimed, standing to his feet and moving to guard Mabel better, “I knew you’d be behind this!”
“I’m not behind anything, Pine Tree!” The demon assured, hands up in defense.
“Then what are you doing here?” Dipper practically growled.
“Making an offer to grant your wish,” Bill said casually twisting a bit and crossing a leg over the other in a casual floating sit.
“My wish?”
“Yeah!” Bill said cheerfully, “Let’s get this falling star shooting back into the sky where she belongs!”
Dipper narrowed his eyes and watched Bill suspiciously, “Why would you offer that?”
“What can I say, I’ve always been fond of you, kid!” Bill ruffled Dipper’s cap happily before floating out of his swatting hands, “And if you help me, then I’ll help you!”
“Help you with what?”
“See, Pine tree, you’re all grown up now. You’ve lived life and got enough experience to guide someone through humanity. And you’ve proved that you’re smart enough to as well,” Bill started casually.
“And?” Dipper asked suspiciously.
“And I want to give it a try!” Bill gushed.
Dipper stared at him for a long moment. “No.”
“C’mon, Pine Tree!” Bill pushed, “You scratch my back and I’ll scratch yours!” There was suddenly a devious look in Bill’s eye, “Unless you want Shooting Star to stay like this…”
“Of course not!” Dipper snapped before glancing back at Mabel. He frowned and looked back at Bill, “You can fix her?”
“Like she never got ran over!”
Dipper gnawed on his bottom lip for a moment, brushing a stray strand of hair out of Mabel’s face. “And what exactly do you want?” He asked softly.
“I want the whole human experience!” Bill said eagerly. “I inhabit a body and live with you and Shooting Star. You’ll let me help you at that crummy Shack of yours and let me see what it’s like being one of you meatbags!”
Dipper narrowed his eyes suspiciously, “And what body would you be inhabiting?” He asked, well aware that if Bill makes a deal with you, it all needs to be loophole free.
“We’re in a hospital, Pine Tree. And your sister isn’t the only one checked out of her body!” Bill snapped his fingers, a window opening up in the middle of the air to show another patient, a man just a bit older than Dipper, peacefully laying on the bed. “And I already did my research. No one’s gonna miss him! No family visits him, kid. I get his body and he gets to move on. It’s win-win!”
Dipper looked back to Mabel. If he agreed to this, she’d be okay again. But he’d be sentencing someone else to death just so Bill could take their body.
But Mabel would be okay.
Dipper glared up at Bill. “You have to promise that she stays safe and healthy,” He said, “No hurting her as soon as we make the deal.”
“Fine, but I get to sleep in your room,”
