Lower spending in 2009 and 2010
LGBT tourists felt the impact of the global economic crisis and restricted travel since the second quarter of 2008. According to the report, regional vacations or the so called “staycations” became a popular alternative for LGBT tourists wanting to spend less while travelling during the crisis. This led to a US$4 billion decline in travel spending, to US$65 billion, in 2010. Nevertheless, from November 2009 to October 2010, demand started to level out, showing a small 1 to 3% decline and indicators point to a recovery in 2011.
