Mutagenic assays, such as the S.
typhimurium test, have been widely used to assess the antimutagenic and anticarcinogenic
activities of various compounds. The aim of the
present study was to evaluate the antimutagenic
effects of Sesbania javanica Miq. flower DMSO
extract and isolate the major flavonoid against
AFB
1 and B(a)P using the Ames test. The results
of this study demonstrate that Sesbania javanica
Miq. flower DMSO extract and quercetin 3-2Grhamnosylrutinoside are capable of inhibiting the
mutagenicity of AFB1and B(a)P. These results
indicate that the Sesbania javanica Miq. flower
contains antimutagens inhibiting the mutagenicities of AFB
1and B(a)P. These results concur with
the study of Nakahara et al (2002) with 80%
methanol extract.
