Fresh turmeric rhizomes (2 kg) were purchased from the main fruit and vegetable market in Dhaka,
Bangladesh in December 2002 and a sample of the material was deposited at the Herbarium of
Department of Biological and Biomedical Sciences, The Aga Khan University, Karachi with the voucher
# CL-RH-11-00-32. The plant material was cleaned of adulterants, sliced and was soaked in 70%
aqueous-methanol by cold maceration at room temperature for a total of 3 days after which the filtrate
was collected through Whatman qualitative grade 1 filter papers and the plant material re-soaked twice.
