The nucleases show specificity toward either RNA or DNA and also toward the bases and position of cleavage of the 3',5'-phosphodiester bonds. The nucleotidases range from those with relatively high specificity, such as 5'- AMP nucleotidase, to those with broad specificity, such as the acid and alkaline phosphatases, which will hydrolyze any of the 3'- or 5'-nucleo- tides. AMP deaminase is specific for AMP. Adenosine deaminase is much less specific, since not only adeno but also 2'-deoxyadenosine and many other 6-aminopurine nucleosides are deaminated by this enzyme.
