Many studies have found that a lot of individual factors have contributed to insomnia. First, consuming caffeine is one of the main causes of insomnia among college students. According to Margolis (2009), adults who consumed caffeine before bedtime stayed up late, slept for shorter time, and experienced worse sleep quality. In addition, studies shows that adolescents who consume caffeine mainly through sodas have shorter sleep and poorer sleep quality. Light from electronic devices is also proved to cause sleep deprivation in college students. Hershner & Chervin (2014) found that the light from computers, smartphones, and tablets restrained the melatonin causing sleepiness and less relaxing sleep. A 200-300 lux light source was sufficient enough to restrain the melatonin. Two hours of using tablet computer produced 50 lux of light. Moreover, sleep deprivation is a result of stress which commonly happens among college students. The transition to college life, academic demands and social expectations can be stressful and cause college students to encounter insomnia (Villanova University Counseling Center, 2015). Consequently, sleep deprivation can be very harmful to college students if it is not solved in time. A study by Ellenbogen, Payne & Stickgold (2006), inadequate sleep has negative impacts on cognitive performances and memory as neurons cannot function properly. It affects focus, attention, learning and ability to organize information.
