Resistance to corrosion:
The formation of chromium carbides and the associated chromium depleted regions within the area of the deposition predisposes the steel to intercrystalline corrosion.
Although at delivery condition (solution annealing) there is no hazard concerning intercrystalline corrosion, it can appear after welding or by applying high temperatures.
A good resistance to corrosion is shown in most natural environmental media (water, rural- and urbanised areas) where major chlorine and salt concentration are missing.
AISI 304 is not suitable for applications where sea water is involved and must not be used in swimming pools or swimming environments.
