Conclusion
PID is a common presentation at sexual health
departments that can be caused by a variety of bacteria
leading to long-term chronic pain or infertility.
As there is no accurate diagnostic test for PID, the
clinician needs to consider a range of factors including
presenting complaints, medical history, sexual history,
examination findings, initial diagnostics, treatment
regimens and sexual partners when diagnosing and
treating this infection. There are a variety of nursing,
clinical assessment and prescribing skills that need
to be employed when managing PID. Consequently,
nurses should ensure they are working within their
scope of practice, keeping up-to-date and working for
the patients’ best interests.
