In particular, there is a need for a focused study to examine how ocean acidification may impact squid.
Here we investigate the impacts of elevated pCO2 on the early life history of Atlantic
longfin squid Doryteuthis pealeii (formerly Loligo pealeii) paralarval
development (time to hatching and size at hatching), statolith size,
and statolith morphology. The study species, D. pealeii, is of
significant commercial importance in the North Atlantic [47] and
is considered a key prey item for a variety of marine mammal,
seabird, and finfish species [27,31].
