Since the previous edition (1985) many of the chapters have been completely revised incorporating information on topics such as computers in animal production, and animal welfare which have increased in importance in recent years. The book consists of 15 chapters covering: general principles; mathematical techniques for production medicine; record systems and herd monitoring; control of diseases in food producing animals (epidemiology, risk factors, and principles of controlling diseases); dairy health and production management programme; maintaining reproduction efficiency in dairy cattle; culling and genetic improvement programmes for dairy cattle; health management of dairy calves and replacement heifers; mastitis control in dairy herds; dairy nutrition; dairy cattle housing and environmental management; planned animal health and production in beef cattle breeding herds; health and production management in beef feedlots; planned animal health and production in swine herds; and health and production management for sheep. The book is aimed at providing students and practitioners with the principles and techniques on which to base animal health programmes.
