The burden of stroke is greater for African American women than for women of other races or ethnicities. The stroke prevalence in the United Statesis 4.7% for African American women, 2.9% forWhite women, and 1.4% for Mexican Americanwomen (Go et al., 2013). African American women have poorer 1-year survival after ischemic stroke(Quereshi, Suri, Zhou, & Divani, 2006) and greaterpoststroke disability (CDC, 2005) than otherwomen.
