The tail pipe noise of an exhaust muffler was simulated using
one dimensional CFD model and its results were validated by
experiments. It was found that the results of the simulation are
in good agreement with experimental results at the 2nd order of
the engine rotational frequency, although at the high order of engine,
there exist differences caused by the flow noise which was
not considered in the simulation. Based on the one dimensional
standard CFD model, a simplified model which can provide an
acceptable accuracy and save more than 90% of execution time
compared with the standard model was proposed in the present
research. The simplified model makes it possible for engineers to
try more designs in the inner structural optimization of a muffler.
The standard model can be applied to validate the optimized designs
before conducting an experiment and manufacturing a
muffler.
