The condition of the culture was checked daily. The chlorophyte
Brachiomonas submarina (TV15) and the cryptophyte Rhodomonas
salina (TV22), obtained from the culture collection of Tva¨rminne
Zoological Station(University ofHelsinki)were grow nexponentially
onf/2-Simedium(GuillardandRyther,1962;Guillard,1975)at 18 8C
and 6%salinity in aged seawater. Cell concentrations of the cultures
were determined by microscopy(LeitzLabovert,25)usingaBu¨ rcher
chamber. Also, the dry weight (DW, mg l1) was determined by
filtering a known volume ofwell-mixed cultures on combusted (4 h,
450 8C), pre-weighed filters (WhatmanGF/F), dried at 65 8C for 24 h.
