The fact that the majority of the local hosts rely heavily on tourism as their means of living might also contribute to their positive perception toward the development of tourism. Although tourism has been viewed as the catalyst for the economic development on their island, the hosts are fully aware of the negative impacts of tourism, particularly to the price and cost of living (price of good and services, price of land and housing) as well as negative impacts on the environment. On the other hand, being guests to the island, the Malay tourists focus more on environmental impacts as this factor explains the highest variance. Many of the tourists to the island destinations go there to enjoy many water-based activities such as scuba diving, snorkeling, swimming and canoeing. These water-based activities are closely related to the environment.
