There is a market for hand-crafted items in other parts of the world, as Bill and Peggy discovered in 1981. That year, the Abilympics, an international ability and skills contest for disabled people, was held in Tokyo. Although Bill did not attend the Abilympics, he did send a variety of his leather and deer handbags, wallets, purses, and key rings for exhibition. The national president of the Paraplegic and Physically Disabled Federation, Dr. N. R. Jefferson, who traveled with the disabled team from New Zealand, said, "great interest was shown in Mr. Jones's entry." Several Japanese dignitaries were presented with Bill's leather goods that they had admired. The Joneses received a few orders for leather goods from Japanese companies, but the orders were not repeated, and no effort was made to establish formal links with those Japanese companies
