It is still a challenge to keep the working hours in accordance with the
laws, but it is changing for the better. For the migrant workers, the
more hours you work the more you get paid, which is very attractive.
Therefore, employer ambitions to ensure that workers work reasonable
hours for the benefit of workers’ health and for the purpose of abiding
by the laws, is not necessarily well received by the workers themselves.
However, there is a generational shift. “The second generation of
migrant workers is more educated and they feel less pressure than their
parents to support the whole family”, says Wang Lin. “They are
concerned about work and life balance, self-satisfaction and selfdevelopment.”
This trend is in line with IKEA’s CSR ambitions.
