The TSC of samples was determined according to the Liebermann–
Burchard colorimetric method (Kim, 1969) with minor
modifications, and using cholesterol as standard. The LB colour reagent
was prepared freshly by adding 50 lL concentrated H2SO4 to
2 mL acetic anhydride. Then, 1 mL of solution of sugarcane lipids in
chloroform was added to the LB colour reagent, stirred for 1 min
and kept at room temperature for 13 min. The absorbance of the
mixture was measured with a spectrophotometer at 650 nm. Results
were expressed as mg cholesterol/100 g DW.
