Drought in the Lerderderg River, Victoria, created
water quality conditions that killed introduced trout in
upstream pools and left reduced populations in pools
downstream (Closs & Lake, 1995). The native fish,
Galaxias olidus, normally does not occur with trout as a
result of predation and competition (Fletcher, 1986).
However, the galaxiids appear to be better adapted to
drought conditions. With the breaking of the drought,
their range was extended into trout-free sections
