Major inks Korean tie on films
SET-listed Major Cineplex Group Plc, the country's largest cinema chain,has forged a partnership with south Korea-based entertainment giant CJ E&M Corporation to co-produce films to serve the Thai and global markets.
Both parties yesterday signed a memo-randum of understanding to jointly pro-duce six films this vear. The first film is slated for release by mid-2016.
The cooperation will help boost the Thai film industry and some movies will be released to the global market in the futuer, said Vicha Poolvaraluck, chief executive of Major Cineplex.
CJ E&M is the largest entertainment group in Asia with integrated media opera-tions including film, music, cable TV and online games. It is also the largest film pro-ducer and distributor in South Korea. Major will rely on CJ E&M's production and distribution expertise that has led to its success in many Asian countries ''This business alliance will open new opportunities for Thai films. to be more rec-ognised internationally and be exported to overseas markets including China, Japan and the US in the future'' Mr Vicha said. Kim Song-su, chief executive and chairman of CJ E&M, said the partner-ship showed its strong interest in the Thai film market as it is the largest and most advanced in Southeast Asia. The alliance is for the long term, so that the Korean side can work closely with its Thai partner to make some changes in the Thai, Korean and Asian film industries. MAJOR shares closed yesterday on the SHT at 34 baht, up 25 satang, in trade worth 137 million bat.
