Data for the present study were drawn from the National Comorbidity
Survey-Replication (NCS-R). This survey examined the mental
health of people living in the United States for more details
regarding methodology and design). Participants were 9,282 individuals
who took part in the overall survey (Part I), and 5,692 individuals
who took part in Part II of the survey that focused on certain types
of psychopathology, risk factors, and correlates of mental disorders.
Of these, 1,254 reported having been involved in aMVA. Participants
in those study encompassed those who had experienced an MVA and
identified this as the only or worst trauma they had been exposed to
(N = 165). Participants who reported that they had been exposed to
more than one type of traumatic event (including an MVA) were asked
which of these types of events they considered the “worst trauma.”
Those who identified the MVA as the “worst trauma” were included
in this study
