Long, long ago, even before the beginning of the Christian era, one legend told, there was a very bad-smelling giant. This giant was more than three feet tall. He lived in a deep forest not far from a village in China. People who offended him were afflicted with illnesses. One day, a young man came up with a brilliant idea and suggested that a din should be made on order to frighten the giant away. Accordingly, the villagers collected a heap of bamboo stems and set them on fire. The bursting noise of the bamboo stems made the giant so scared that he ran away and never returned to the village again.
