In the research for our book Global Leadership : The Next Generation, we asked the 200 leaders to rank the most important success factors for global leadership in the past, present, and future. For leaders of the past and present, “demonstrating self-confidence as a leader” was ranked as most important. For leaders of the future, however, the top-ranking success factors were “consistently treating people with respect,” followed by “understanding the impact of globalization on his/her business” and “creating and communicating a clear vision for her/his organization.” In other words, the global leaders of the future need to move beyond themselves and focus on those around them. Fundamental as this may seem, it signals a significant shift in awareness toward a realization that in a global environment the human element (e.g..respect for others) becomes even more important.
