National police chief Chaktjip Chaijinda,meanwhile,has instructed all police forces across the country to launch a series of crackdowns on criminal activities ahead of the Loy Krathong festival, said Krisana Phatthanacharoen, deputy spokesman of the Royal Thai Police. The campaign began on Nov 4 and will end tomorrow, Pol Col Krisana said. The police forces were also working with other agencies to strengthen security measures as key tourist attractions such as Asiatique the Riverfront, a large open-air shopping and dining area in Bangkok that is normally packed with foreign and local visitors, he said. Measures were also being put in place to restrict several dangerous festive activities such as setting off fireworks in built- up areas or floating paper lanterns near airports, he said.
