The ASK-20 has many potential uses. In clinical settings,
this brief measure can be conveniently administered
to identify potential barriers to adherence that
could limit treatment effectiveness. Then, the barriers
reflected in ASK-20 responses can be the target of
intervention or education programs. The patients’
responses may be used to initiate and facilitate more
targeted discussion of barriers to adherence between
clinicians and patients. The ASK-20 may also be
useful for research purposes, such as evaluating outcomes
of patient education programs aimed at enhancing
treatment adherence. Because it is a generic
measure designed to be completed by patients regardless
of their medical condition, the ASK-20 can be
administered across various groups of patients in
order to identify whether there are specific adherence
barriers that tend to be particularly common among
certain patient populations
