It’s been awhile since I’ve had authentic Thai food. It feels like an eternity since I’ve savored some tasty, flavorful Green Curry, or enjoyed fresh watermelon and guava on a stick. I’ve noticed that Thai food has become popular in America now. Many Thai restaurants in America are even owned and operated by real authentic Thais. However, in my opinion, real Thai food is totally different from American Thai food. It is not only that they are different in the ingredients, but also different in tastes because most Thai restaurants simply have to adapt and then abide by American style and taste.
Here are some differences I noticed while sampling American Thai food:
1. Portion Size
There is a tremendous difference between American food portions and Thai food portions, something I had completely forgotten about after living in America for so long. One thing that I noticed while living here is that American love HUGE plates!! I remember the first year I came here I gained almost 20 pounds in 4 months! It’s not that I ate less in Thailand, it’s just that the portions of each meal were smaller. The American sized food portion, indeed, is double or even triples the size of a normal Thai street food portion. No doubt this contributes to why many Americans are diabetic and/or obese!
2. Price
There’s no surprise with this one. Living expenses are typically far more expensive in America than in Thailand. While in Thailand a normal plate of rice topped with a single dish and possibly with a fried egg costs only about $1 – $1.30 while in America the same dish would probably costs $10-$13. Even though the American portion size is 2 to 3 times larger than the Thai portion size, I still believe that Thai food served in America is way more expensive than in Thailand. In addition, in Thailand, we have food stalls positioned across the city’s streets. These are cheaply priced meals that street vendors prepare which are ready and served within just a few minutes. Many of these stalls also sell superb fresh Thai fruits including: watermelon, mango, pineapple, and guava. The fruit of your choice will be cut into small parts, put in a plastic bag and you can eat it with a provided sharp wooden stick. Of course, the price for this healthy portion of vitamins is only about 30 cents and these various fruits are always stored in ice and therefore have a refreshingly cool taste.
3. Portion of Meat
America has long been famous as a large meat consuming nation, so it’s not surprising me to find American Thai food is generous with meat. In fact, a typical dish in Thailand will come mixed with a little bit of meat and vegetables. In my opinion, this might be why real Thai food is much healthier than American Thai food.
4.Flavor Level
Thai food in America is often bland. I don’t mean that all dishes are lacking completely in flavor, but it’s they are lacking the proportionate amount of flavor i.e. not spicy enough, not sour enough, or not rich enough. The American Thai food, in fact, is sweeter than Thailand Thai food; this is why it lacks authentic Thai taste.
These are the main reasons why when I eat it Thai food, I know where I am!!!
